Spring Semester Global Course

Opium and Opioids: The History, Chemistry, and Economics of Pain Relief

In this course, students will study the global use of painkillers (opium and opioids) from a historical, chemical, neuro-biological, medical and economic perspective. The aim will be to gain a greater understanding of the reasons for and impact of the deadliest drug crisis now facing United States. This will be a discussion-based course, where students will be asked to lead classes on a variety of topics of their interest related to the opioid crisis. It will also involve fieldwork in the local community in order to deepen students’ understanding of the problem, and it will conclude with an opinion piece or policy paper suggesting real solutions for overcoming the crisis.
