FIRE Conference 2020
2020 FIRE Conference
Event Description:
LFA’s FIRE Conference, Fostering Intercultural Respect & Engagement, was conceived three years ago as an annual event for peers to trade stories and discuss key topics in the context of a larger world. Engagement is easy when the respect is mutual, but as we move towards an increasingly polarized climate, we are called to redefine resistance and reconciliation if we truly desire to meet in the middle, where understanding resides.
The 2020 FIRE Conference was held on Lake Forest Academy’s campus on February 25, as high school leaders and teachers shared, listened and practiced redefining resistance and reconciliation with the goal of meeting in the middle to foster respect and engagement.
2020 Speaker
Jamil Zaki is the Director of the Social Neuroscience Lab at Stanford University and author of "The War for Kindness: Building Empathy in a Fractured World." The book has been called a “masterpiece” by Angela Duckworth and a “wide-ranging, practical guide to making the world better” by NPR. Jamil received his Ph.D. from Columbia and his post-doctoral training from Harvard. His work spans a number of domains, including social influence and prosocial behavior, with new research from his lab exploring how to encourage empathy in ways that help people overcome division and build connection. Jamil believes empathy is something anyone can train themselves to improve upon, and his research expertly explores how empathy works, why it matters. He is also passionate about helping organizations build empathy into their workplace cultures to foster wellbeing and collective success.
