About the event
Three Extraordinary Women headline Lake Forest Academy’s annual Chicago Networking Event at 11:30 a.m. Central Time on May 20. But, this time, we’re going online and opening this event to a global audience of alumni, parents, alumni parents and LFA friends.
Originally scheduled for April 2020 as part of LFA’s 2020 Sesquicentennial celebration of Ferry Hall’s opening, these extraordinary leaders agreed to join us this year as we turn the annual Chicago Networking Event global:
- Renata Ferraiolo P’21, ’24 vice president of marketing, North America, SC Johnson
- Carole Segal GP’21, ’24 Crate & Barrel co-founder and Foodstuffs founder and former CEO
- Ferry Hall alumna Louise Hamilton Short ’66, founder of Hamilton Financial Partners, co-founder of KHP and senior financial advisor at United Income, a Capital One company
With varied backgrounds and perspectives, these dynamic women will examine the realities of leadership, business, family, balance, glass ceilings and more. Society needs an informed citizenry to actively participate in discussing the most influential issues of our time. That’s the reason we host LFA students and alumni, Ferry Hall alumnae, parents and friends of the Academy—all from the convenience of your favorite computer device.

Bio
Elected in 2007 as the first-ever woman to chair the Lake Forest Academy Board of Trustees, Catherine “Cate” Marlette Waddell, P’01,’03, left an indelible mark on the Academy through her volunteer service. She remains passionate about the school’s mission, proud of her two sons’ alma mater and is a proponent of independent school education.
Waddell began volunteering at LFA in 1997. She served two years as President of the school’s Parents Association. In 1998, she was elected to the school’s Board of Trustees where she ultimately ended up serving for 12 years. Waddell headed the Board’s Advancement Committee, worked with admissions to increase the day student population, helped champion the Ferry Hall (alumnae) Task Force and worked tirelessly to maintain the Academy’s competitive edge. Following her term as board chair, she assumed the role of chair for the $68.8 million Campaign for LFA. She continues her service to the Academy as a Life Trustee.
Waddell’s affinity for independent schools comes from her own pre-collegiate education at Buffalo Seminary in Buffalo, N.Y., the country’s eighth-oldest, four-year, all-girls, college preparatory school.
Waddell’s extensive involvement in the community includes serving the Chicago Botanic Garden as a member of the executive committee and chairing strategic planning. She is Illinois Vice Regent for the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association, the governing board of George Washington’s Mount Vernon, where she is chair of the Investment Committee and co-chair of the Campaign for Mount Vernon. Waddell also contributes as a sustaining member of the Garden Club of Evanston; and serves as a member of the Chicago Tiffany Circle of the American Red Cross.
Other past and present affiliations include Chicago Symphony Orchestra; Friends of the Wilmette Public Library; Kohl Children’s Museum of Greater Chicago; Dartmouth College Alumni Council; Bucknell University Parents Board; and various school and youth boards in Wilmette, Ill. and San Marino, Calif.
LFA is proud to sponsor this provocative dialogue, led by the experiences of three members of the Academy community who will share their insights, expertise, challenges and outlook as leaders. LFA alumni, Ferry Hall alumnae, parents, alumni parents, grandparents and friends are welcome.
This discussion is poignant as our panelists examine the realities of leadership, business, family, volunteer service and more. It’s all within the context of LFA’s yearlong celebration of the sesquicentennial anniversary of the opening of Ferry Hall.
