A trio of students from the Lake Forest Academy Class of 2024 recently earned National Merit Scholarships. Theresa Fu ’24 and Toby Nelson ’24 were awarded National Merit Scholarships from the National Merit Scholarship Corp., while Luke Feltzin ’24 was named a recipient of a college-sponsored National Merit Scholarship from Vanderbilt University.

More than 15,000 high school students were named finalists for the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program with the scholarship winners from each state having the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The number of winners named in each state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the nation’s graduating high school seniors. A total of over 6,870 honorees earned the “Merit Scholar” title and received a total of nearly $26 million in college scholarships.

The 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program started in October 2022 when the then-high school juniors took the PSAT/NMSQT, which served as an initial screen of program entrants. Last fall, the highest-scoring participants in each state, representing less than one percent of the nation’s high school seniors, were named semifinalists on a state-representational basis. This included five LFA seniors among the more than 16,000 semifinalists.
