Four LFA students have qualified for the Illinois Junior Academy of Science (IJAS) State Fair after participating in the regional poster session on Saturday, March 4.

The poster session, held at Niles North High School, included students from middle and high schools throughout the north half of Cook and DuPage Counties, and all of Lake County. All four LFA participants earned Gold medals, advancing them on to the state competition.

The IJAS State Fair is the largest middle and high school research competition in Illinois, and students will have the opportunity to compete for scholarships and awards. This year’s IJAS State Fair will be held April 28-29 at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Ill.

LFA’s students worked either independently or with an outside professor on their research. The titles of their posters are as follows:

Jerry Ren ’24: Design of Acetylcholinesterase Inhibitors of Alzheimer’s Disease Therapy

Kate Graham ’24 and Jonathan Xiao ’24: Novel Cypermethrin Bioremediation using Genetically Engineered Bacillus. Subtilis SCK6 with Enhanced Esterase Expression

Teddy He ’25: Exoplanets classification according to density

Ren and Froce Chang ’24 also participated in the IJAS paper session on Wednesday, March 1. Chang earned a Silver medal and Ren earned a Gold medal, qualifying him for the State-level paper session as well.
